A convenient synthesis of pure zeolite A from aluminium and silicon molecular precursors by a sol-gel procedure is described. The microcrystals quantitatively obtained are of high chemical quality, very good crystallinity and size homogeneity. Modification of the composition of the starting gel, especially the ratios Si/Al or Si/H2O, results in different morphologies of the crystals or alteration in the size distribution. In addition to the normal synthetic procedure used an extra purification step can be performed between particles of slightly different sizes by applying a selective procedure based on the differential speed of sedimentation. The so obtained homodispersed samples were subsequently used for the preparation of high quality close-packed monograin-layers deposited on various substrates.
